Our Vineyards

... Martinborough, New Zealand

Part of an elevated old river terrace the soils are friable and gravelly. The limey character is detectable in the premium whites, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. Fifteen acres of different varietals were planted in 1986 and these mature vines are the backbone of the current vintages. New planting was undertaken from 1999 through to 2001. These young vines are in full production and add youthfulness and complexity. New Pinot Noir French clones, the Pinot Gris and Syrah climb the 30% slope behind the winery. The situation is frost free with good air flow down the Dry River and the slopes of Bull Hill. There is some protection from the southerly winds. The prevailing wind here is from the West. This sometimes affects flower set. New latter flowering varietals are being trialed. There are 50 acres in vines.

Management

The vineyards are operated under the New Zealand Winegrowers Sustainable Winegrowing. Mechanical use is limited. Stock are run through the vineyard during Winter to manage weed growth and there is an integrated composting system. Spraying is confined to organically acceptable sprays. Planting in the gardens surrounding the vineyard includes many plants that host beneficial insects. Moulds are avoided due to good air circulation in the vineyard and intensive leaf plucking when the weather gets sultry.

Murdoch James Estate also manages two nearby Martinborough vineyards.

Waiata – leased from the Thomson family

Marita – leased from the Ploughman family.

Herbs like comfrey and chicory and buckwheat are planted in swaths every second row and mulched in to provide nutrients to the vines.
